A duvet is a type of bedding— a soft flat bag traditionally filled with down or feathers, or a combination of both and used on a bed as a blanket. Duvets originated in rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of the Eider duck, known for its usefulness as an insulator. Today they can be found with filling materials such as silk, wool, or artificial fibers (such as polyester batting or other artificial material).
A duvet cover will protect your duvet for many years and you wash them as you would comforters (when needed). I recommend a high thread count cotton as you'll get many more years use from it - but the velvet sounds dreamy!
